Established in 2001, the .NAME top-level extension is the single TLD meant for personal websites only. These domains can include personal or fictitious names, nicknames and/or other titles people are popular by. Initially, only 3rd-level registrations were allowed, so if you wished to purchase john.doe.name, you were required to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were liberalized and second-level registrations were also allowed. Already grabbed third-level domains remained online.
